Students

At The Blandford School, we support every student to achieve academically, grow personally, and explore new opportunities both in and out of the classroom.

We carefully track progress and provide personalised learning to help each student reach their full potential. From Year 9, students begin shaping their future by selecting some of their subjects for Years 10 and 11, with guidance from experienced staff to ensure choices suit their interests, strengths, and future aspirations.

Beyond the classroom, a wide range of clubs and activities allows students to develop skills, explore interests, and build lasting friendships, while opportunities such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) enable students to challenge themselves through volunteering, skills development, physical fitness, and adventurous expeditions.

At The Blandford School, we are committed to helping every student reach their full potential. We provide a supportive and inspiring environment where students can achieve academic excellence, develop confidence and resilience, and discover new interests and talents through a wide range of extracurricular activities, trips, and enrichment opportunities. Our goal is to nurture well-rounded individuals ready to thrive both in and beyond the classroom.

Students can find support for a wide range of needs on our Where Can I Find Help? page. Whether you need academic guidance, wellbeing support, help with organisation and study skills, or advice on next steps, there are resources and staff ready to assist you. You can explore all of the support available to you by visiting our Where Can I Find Help? page here

We closely monitor each student’s progress and provide tailored learning experiences to ensure everyone can reach their full potential. Our dedicated teachers use a variety of teaching methods and targeted support to challenge, inspire, and guide students, helping them to achieve their best in every subject. In Year 9, students start to shape their future by selecting some of their subjects for Years 10 and 11. With guidance and support from our experienced staff, they can choose courses that suit their interests, strengths, and future aspirations, helping them build a pathway towards success in further education and beyond. From Year 7, students receive structured careers guidance from our Careers Lead, Paul Gilson (pgilson@blandfordschool.org.uk), helping them to begin exploring future pathways and develop early aspirations.

From Year 9, students benefit from individual careers guidance sessions with our professional Careers Adviser from EDT. Working closely with each student, these sessions focus on identifying strengths and interests, setting realistic and achievable goals, planning next steps, and uncovering opportunities they may not have previously considered. This personalised support ensures every student is empowered to follow their own unique path.

Our Strategic Careers Lead is Deputy Head, Duncan Smith (dsmith@blandfordschool.org.uk).
The Governor responsible for Careers is Peter Slocombe, and our Enterprise Adviser is Evonne Pemberton, who supports the school by strengthening links between education and the world of work.

To explore courses and apprenticeships, students and families can also use the National Careers Service:

We offer a rich co‑curricular programme with over 20 clubs and activities across sports, performing arts, creative pursuits, academic enrichment, and more, so every student can explore interests, develop skills, and build lasting friendships. Whether you enjoy team sports, music and drama, or clubs like board games and enterprise, there’s something here to suit all year groups and abilities. You can explore the full range of opportunities and sign up for clubs here

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) gives students the chance to challenge themselves through volunteering, skills development, physical fitness, and adventurous expeditions. At The Blandford School, we offer the Silver Award in Year 12. Participants take part in volunteering, improve their fitness, develop a new skill, and complete a three-day expedition, walking around seven hours per day and camping for two nights—one of which may be a wild camp with no facilities.
