Medical & First Aid

Caring for Student Health

At The Blandford School, student health, safety and wellbeing are a priority. We have clear procedures in place to support students who feel unwell or require medical attention during the school day.

Medical Room

Our Medical Room is staffed full time by our Head First Aider, Mr Collins. Students who are feeling unwell or have injured themselves during the school day may be referred to the Medical Room for assessment and support.

First Aid Support Around School

In addition to the Medical Room, trained First Aiders are:

  • Reception

  • Guidance & Welfare

  • PE Leaders

  • The Site Team

Students can approach any of these areas if they need help.

If Your Child Feels Unwell at School

If a student becomes unwell during the day, they must inform a member of staff, who will arrange for them to be seen by a First Aider in the Medical Room or appropriate support area.

Students must not contact parents/carers directly using their mobile phones if they feel unwell. This is in line with the school’s Mobile Phone Policy. All arrangements for students to go home due to illness must be made through the Medical Team.

Parents/carers will be contacted by the school if a student needs to go home.

Medication in School

If your child needs to take medication during the school day:

  • Please bring the medication to Reception (students should not carry medication themselves unless previously agreed).

  • You will be asked to complete a Medication Consent Form.

  • Once completed, medication can be safely stored and administered by trained staff at the appropriate times.

Medication should be provided in its original packaging and clearly show the expiry date. We are unable to administer medication without a completed consent form.

Medical Conditions & Care Plans

If your child has a medical condition (for example asthma, diabetes, allergies or epilepsy), please ensure the school is fully informed. Where appropriate, an Individual Healthcare Plan will be put in place to support your child.

Please notify the school of any changes to medical needs or emergency contact details.

Illness & Returning to School

If your child has been absent due to illness, they should only return to school when they are well enough to participate fully in lessons.

There are no restrictions on the time of day a student may return to school once they are well enough.

Contacting the Medical Team

If you have any questions about medical support in school, medication, or your child’s health needs, please contact Reception, who will be happy to help or pass your query on to the Medical Team.
