Sixth Form Students Explore Italy!

Sixth Form Students Enjoy Inspirational Educational Trip to Italy

Over the February half term, our Sixth Form students and staff set off on an unforgettable seven-day, two-centre educational visit to Italy, combining academic learning with cultural discovery in some of the country’s most iconic locations.

Exploring the Bay of Naples

The trip began in Naples, where students were immediately immersed in the vibrant atmosphere of southern Italy. From there, they travelled to the world-famous Pompeii Archaeological Park, walking through remarkably preserved Roman streets frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.

Seeing homes, bathhouses, temples and even ancient graffiti up close brought classroom learning vividly to life. Students were able to contextualise their studies while developing a deeper understanding of Roman society, daily life and the impact of natural disasters on civilisation.

The group then travelled to the beautiful coastal town of Sorrento, where they were based for the first part of their stay. With sweeping views across the Bay of Naples, Sorrento provided the perfect setting for reflection, exploration and some well-earned gelato.

Volcanoes, Ruins and Island Adventures

One of the most memorable days included climbing Mount Vesuvius, where students stood at the rim of the crater, taking in breathtaking panoramic views while learning about the geology of the region and the science behind volcanic eruptions.

A visit to the archaeological site of Herculaneum offered a fascinating contrast to Pompeii. Smaller yet even better preserved in places, Herculaneum gave students further insight into Roman engineering, architecture and social structure.

The group also enjoyed a spectacular excursion to the island of Capri, where a boat tour around the coastline showcased dramatic cliffs, hidden caves and crystal-clear waters. Students had time to explore the island independently, soaking up the atmosphere, browsing local shops and experiencing Italian culture beyond the tourist landmarks.

Discovering Ancient and Modern Rome

The second centre of the trip took students to the historic capital, Rome. Here, history truly surrounded them at every turn.

Walking through the Colosseum, students were able to visualise the scale and spectacle of ancient Roman entertainment. Exploring the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill allowed them to trace the political and social heart of the Roman Empire, standing in the very spaces where emperors once ruled.

The visit also included Vatican City, where students experienced the unique blend of religion, art and history that defines this remarkable city-state.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Throughout the week, students demonstrated maturity, curiosity and enthusiasm. The trip provided opportunities to:

  • Deepen subject knowledge through first-hand experiences

  • Develop independence and resilience

  • Strengthen friendships across the Sixth Form

  • Engage with different cultures and perspectives

Most importantly, it was a chance to create shared memories that will last a lifetime.

At The Blandford School Sixth Form, we are proud to offer experiences that extend beyond the classroom — combining academic excellence with enrichment, adventure and personal growth.
