40 MILES BY SEA KAYAK – ALL FOR THE BLANDFORD SCHOOL SCIENCE FACULTY! 
A huge congratulations to former member of our Science Faculty Paul Jenkins, 63, who has completed an incredible 40-mile (64km) sea kayaking challenge to help raise funds for science at The Blandford School. On Saturday 5th September, Paul set off from Swanage, kayaking across open sea to The Needles on the Isle of Wight – and all the way back again!Paul was joined by Allen Westerby, with both Paul and Allen being Paddle UK qualified sea kayak leaders with Poole Harbour Canoe Club. Allen also has a wealth of leadership and coaching experience across a wide range of paddle sports.
The pair took on challenging sea conditions, a Force 4 south-westerly wind, metre-high swells and, eventually, hours of paddling in darkness. Setting off from Monkey Beach at 11.30am, they finally returned safely to Swanage at 2.15am the following morning – completing an extraordinary journey of around 40 miles in over 14 hours. And they made it even tougher by completing the challenge in plastic sea kayaks and on neap tides! Paul’s aim is to raise £10,000 for The Blandford School Science Faculty, helping us purchase new science equipment and opportunities for our students.We are incredibly grateful to Paul and Allen for taking on such a remarkable challenge in support of our school and our students.Please donate here – and read the full story of their epic journey and all their amazing encounters, including a paddle steamer, Spitfire and a ghostly fishing vessel!
